2006 Professional Agricultural Workers Conference

Lecture Series

This program component has been established in recognition of individual who have made significant contributions to the quality of life for rural people.  More specifically, the series is designed to recognize (a) the individuals whose name prefixes the lectures, (b) the persons or organizations receiving special awards, and (c) scholars presenting the lectures.  Each of the lectures will focus on the Conference theme and will be given as follows:

The L. A. Potts Lecture

This PAWC activity is named in honor of the late L. A. Potts, who was instrumental in starting the PAWC.  Dr. Potts served as Dean of Agriculture at Tuskegee University from 1945-1962.  During the Luncheon/Lecture, special recognition will be given to “success stories” in the Land Grant System and to community-based organizations for their contributions toward the betterment of life for rural people.  The lecture will take place on Monday at noon.

The Conference Memorial Lecture

This lecture is named in honor of an individual who, over his or her lifetime, contributed significantly to agricultural and community development.  The scholar invited to give this lecture will focus on the integration of land-grant functions (teaching, research, and extension).  The lecture is hosted by an 1890 University on a rotating basis and held Tuesday at noon. Alcorn State University will host the lecture for 2006.

The George Washington Carver Public Service Hall of Fame Awards and Lecture

During the Banquet/Lecture, special recognition will be given to two individuals (one from within the 1890 system and one from outside the 1890 system) whose work mirrors the public service philosophy of Dr. Carver:  “… to be the greatest good to the greatest number of people.”  The lecture and induction will take place Tuesday evening.
